Devices for coring or sticking

On this page one can find the devices that are used for sticking or coring at depth. This method is used to collect samples from the subsoil. Where coring at depth is a method of sampling where a column of material at depth is collected in a container with a special drill bit or with rotating nozzles. The sampled soil is pulled or cut loose and brought to the surface. This method is used in core drilling, rotary core drilling and when one uses the Sherbrooke sampler. This method normally yields samples with sampling quality class A,B,C or D. Which class applies is determined by the type of sampling device, the drilling technique and the cohesion and moisture of the soil.

Sticking at depth is a method of sampling where a column of material is cut out or pulled out at depth, collected in a container and brought to the surface in the same container. This method is used with the Ackermann device, the VanderStaay drill, the Aqualock sampler, the Beeker sampler, the Begemann sampler, the Dachnovsky device, the dropcorer, the DLDS, the foil sampler, the soil column cylinder, the gouge auger, the sample ring sampler, the MOSTAP, the pistoncorer, the (peat) profile sampler, the ram gouge auger, the sonic drill, the spit sampler, the core sampler, the vibratory flip, the VanderHorst sampler, the vibrocorer, the window sampler and the Zenkovitch drill. Normally yields samples with sampling quality class A,B,C or D. Which class applies is determined by the type of sampling device, the drilling technique and the cohesion and moisture of the material.

The devices that can be used to carry out this sampling methods are found below.

Core barrel with double tube

A device consisting of an outer tube and an inner tube. The outer tube is connected directly to the drill bit and open at the top. The inner tube is stationary and serves to collect the sample. The inner tube is open at the top and fitted with a core sampler at the bottom.

Core barrel with single tube

A device consisting of a single tube that is directly connected to the drill bit. The tube serves to collect the sample and is open at the top and fitted with a core sampler at the bottom.

Core barrel with triple tube

A device consisting of an outer tube with two inner tubes. The outer tube is connected directly to the drill bit an open at the top. The inner tubes are stationary and serve to collect the sample. The outer tube is open at the top and fitted with a core sampler at the bottom and serves to protect the inner tubes where the sample is actually collected.

Gouge

A device consisting of a tube for collecting the sample. This tube is open at the top and fitted with a nozzle at the bottom. This nozzle is partially open in the longitudinal direction.

Sherbrooke

A device consisting of an open construction of tubes and rings of a large diameter which are fitted at the bottom with blades that cut out the sample during sampling. Moreover they prevent the sample from falling out.

Soil probe

A device consisting of a hollow tube which is open at the top and fitted with a mouth at the bottom. The tube serves to collect the sample and is closed in the longitudinal direction. The sticking mouth may have a core sampler, but never has blades that cut out the sample.

Soil probe DLDS

A device consisting of a hollow tube of large diameter which is open at the top and fitted with a sticking mouth at the bottom. The tube serves to collect the sample and is closed in longitudinal direction. The mouth is fitted with blades which, when sampling, cut out the sample and prevent it from falling out.

Soil probe with liner

A device consisting of two precisely fitted tubes that are open at the top and closed in the longitudinal direction. The inner tube (liner) serves to collect the sample. The outer tube has a gripping mouth at the bottom. The mouth may be fitted with a core sampler, but never has blades that cut out the sample.
