Spots in the soil can appear for example when the soil is iron rich and due to groundwater or rain this iron is oxidized leaving green or brown spots on the soil. When encountered they can be classified in three different gradations of spots.

Trail

A trail of spots most of the times indicates a flow of groundwater through the studied soil. A trail is a uninterrupted line of spots, like shown in the picture below. A ‘trail’ can also be found on a much smaller scale. The spots cover between the 20 and 50% of the surface.

A lot

Large spots or even half of the soil which has a different color than it’s original color would indicate a large amount of a specific mineral or metal present in the soil. An example can be seen below. This can also be found on much smaller scale. The spots cover between the 2 and 20% of the surface.

A few

Small spots and mostly less than 50% of the soil indicates a small amount of a specific mineral, metal or pollutive subject in the soil. An example of small spots can be seen below. This can also be found on much smaller scale. The spots cover between the 0 and 2% of the surface.
